Other Types of Mood Disorders

Other types of mood disorders. The DSM-IV-TR includes three mood disorder research types (minor depressive disorder, recurrent brief depressive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder). Other DSM-IV-TR diagnoses are mood disorder due to a general medical condition and substance-induced mood disorder.

These categories are designed to broaden the recognition of mood disorder diagnoses, to describe mood disorder symptoms more specifically than in the past, and to facilitate the differential diagnosis of mood disorders.

Finally, DSM-IV-TR includes three residual disorders: bipolar disorder NOS (not otherwise specified), depressive disorder NOS (not otherwise specified), and mood disorder NOS (not otherwise specified).
