Major depressive disorder need to get special attention from health care providers, related with reports of the Journal of Clinical Oncology published on 11 October in a research that there are about 20 patients with major depressive disorder because of experience a cerebral glioma. Predicted they would experience symptoms one type of mood disorder this, within six months after starting radiotherapy.

Alasdair G. Rooney, MD, of Western General Hospital in England, and colleagues evaluated the frequency, clinical association of independent, and take samples of the 155 patients with new diagnoses of cerebral glioma. While after the patient obtain radiotherapy (T1), patients receiving Structural Clinical Interview (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition) to diagnose major depressive disorder, and follow-up conducted three (T2) and six months (T3) later to do interview again.

The researchers found that the average frequency of Symptoms major depressive disorder  was 13.5, 14.8, and 6.8 percent in T1, T2, T3, respectively. There are a total of 32 cases of major depressive disorder were diagnosed over the observation period (20.6 percent) with good inter-rater diagnostic agreement. Functional disorders and previous history of depression were independent predictors of major depressive disorder (odds ratio, 3.9; 95 percent confidence interval [CI], 1.5 to 10.8, and 2.7, 95 percent CI, 0.99 to 7, 3, respectively). Some depressed patients out of the study because their clinical condition worsened, but major depressive disorder continue for at least three months in almost half of patients with adequate follow-up.

Probably during the primary treatment many of them do not get depressed. But clinically, the frequency of major depressive disorder would seem significant to one in five patients within six months after starting radiotherapy.
