Early Detection of Postpartum Major Depression

There are several factors that make a complex to detect risk of postpartum major depression (PMD). First, the period after childbirth is adaptation period. There are several women who fail to adapt to new conditions and also a new role as a mother. They may not realize that what they experience can not and beyond the norm. Second, social pressure to be "good mother" is such that if a woman does not realize that something was wrong, he was reluctant to admit it with shame and fear.

In addition, women with postpartum major depression are reluctant to say the problem is and it is difficult to share these thoughts with health care professionals, because they feel deemed insane and afraid in isolation so as to bring their babies away from them.

Physicians should contribute to delayed detection of postpartum major depression (PMD) to reduce the risk of distress. Doctors should be able to convince the fact that they have earned. Finally, with the pressures of managed care to evaluate more patients in a limited time, psychological problems often receive cursory attention and are often overlooked.

The family doctor should create a formal mechanism to identify the symptoms of postpartum depression in a patient so that the obstacles can be overcome and prevent unwanted adverse effects. These mechanisms include major postpartum depression to distinguish from other similar disorders, identifying patients at risk, instituting formal screening and providing health education about this disorder that may occur.
